Saturday 26 September

The first day out included an introduction to the UCL campus, which I didn’t quite realise was going to be so old and so beautiful. The campuses I’m used to are the U.S. interpretations of 15th and 16th century campuses. There are so many colleges and universities in the U.S. that, in the 21st century at least, love to show that they have a building that ‘looks like Harry Potter’. This has always bothered me, because

1-most don’t, they literally just have bannisters and or exposed beams, and

2- the campuses in the Harry Potter movies are filmed at Oxford Campuses and medieval cathedrals.

So I am weirdly glad that the school has not said ‘looks like Harry Potter’. To me this is individualistic, and so finally it’s not trying to be copycat. (Sorry if that upsets you about your own college/uni.) See below for my first image of my new school.

As for the tea, it was the first outside of my little room. Drinking in Regents Park while the rain comes and goes and all walks of life are around. I realised while sitting and pretending I wasn’t as cold as I actually was, that this city is really amazing. Having only lived in Florence, and then the outskirts of Atlanta, cities with this amount of green space in the middle, and then many many other parks around is amazing. And although my feet hurt from all the walking, and I was not nearly dressed enough, I felt like London is going to be a healthy city for me. Maybe just give me a Vitamin D injection for my California soul.
