Sunday 18 October

Taking a tube, train and bus to leave the inner city to the gorgeous countryside of Surrey. Luckily I have an extended family of adopted aunts and uncles- some live in Connecticut, Massachusetts, California, but the original (the OG Auntie as it were) lives in Surrey now. So being able to take a 1 hour train (a rail replacement bus this time around, though) to visit makes me feel just that little bit home.

After getting up early, and not necessarily dressing for the weather, I had my first Sunday Roast at a country pub, sitting outside in 50F! That rarely happens in California- we’d have the fireplace on most likely. So a great Sunday Roast (non-vegan of course) after a good hike, and followed by some home tea, it was such a great day out and about. I had almost forgotten what leaves falling and dirt smelled like- I’ve grown so used to concrete, cigarette smoke, and exhaust fumes, with maybe an occasional restaurant doorway wafting some masala chai or warm bread along the street.

Finding the feelings of home is such a good experience during these semester away from everyone, and trying your best to make friends while keeping yourself safe and others. My new home is starting to feel like it.
